Why an IBCLC?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is specifically educated in breastfeeding management and therapy. They work with mothers to prevent and solve breastfeeding problems. To become certified, an IBCLC must pass an International Board Exam covering subjects including counseling, anatomy, physiology, endocrinology, nutrition, biochemistry, immunology, pathology, pharmacology and toxicology of both mother and baby. They are also educated in normal infant/child growth and development. IBCLCs must recertify through retesting and continuing education every five years to insure they keep their knowledge and skills up to date.

Breastfeeding is natural, but it is also a learned skill. Many mothers have little to no exposure to other breastfeeding mothers before giving birth making it difficult to get off to a good start. A consultation with an IBCLC, and the support of other breastfeeding mothers, can greatly improve a mother’s chances of successfully breastfeeding her baby.
